The #1 pound for pound fighter on the planet just got matched up with a guy he publicly didn't want to fight and then insulted by comparing him to a cheap knockoff of Conor McGregor lol.
Islam Makhachev defends his welterweight title against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 on August 15 in Philadelphia. Dana announced it Wednesday. The main event of the UFC's return to Philly for the first time since 2019 is the most dominant champion in the sport versus the Irishman who has been screaming for a title shot since his last two wins.
And Makhachev's reaction to getting booked against Garry is wild.
"If we pick between Ian and Morales in terms of my legacy, I would go with Morales because he's still undefeated," Makhachev said. He wanted Michael Morales. The undefeated Ecuadorian prospect. Said beating Garry "wouldn't mean as much" because Shavkat Rakhmonov already beat him.
Then he called Garry "AliExpress McGregor."
Bro the disrespect is crazy. The #1 contender in the division campaigned for months to get this fight and the champion is telling the world he'd rather fight someone else because at least that guy hasn't lost yet.
Why Makhachev Is a Problem for Everyone
We've been writing about Islam all year. The man is on a different level than basically every fighter in the UFC right now. 28-1 record. Hasn't lost since 2015. That's eleven years without a loss. Sixteen straight wins in the UFC, which ties Anderson Silva for the longest win streak in promotional history.
He won the lightweight title by submitting Oliveira at UFC 280. Defended it four times. Beat Volkanovski twice and finished Poirier. Stopped Moicano. Set the record for most consecutive lightweight title defenses. Then looked at the division and decided he was done with it.
He vacated the lightweight belt and moved to welterweight. Fought Jack Della Maddalena for the 170 pound title at UFC 322 in November and dominated him over five rounds. Unanimous decision. Made JDM, one of the scariest welterweights on the roster, look like he was fighting someone from a different sport.
Now he's defending the welterweight belt for the first time. Against a guy he called a discount version of someone else.
Garry's Case
Ian Machado Garry (17-1) is the #1 ranked welterweight in the UFC and honestly the disrespect from Makhachev is probably going to fuel him more than any motivation speech ever could.
Garry is only 28. The McGregor comparisons have followed him since he signed with the UFC and he's earned some of them. Flashy striker, talks crazy. Carries himself with confidence that borders on arrogance. But unlike the early McGregor comparisons that were based mostly on nationality, Garry has actually backed it up with wins.
His UFC record is 10-1. The only loss came against Shavkat Rakhmonov back in December 2024 and that was a competitive decision against a guy who's undefeated and probably the second most dangerous welterweight in the world. After that loss, Garry came back and beat Carlos Prates and former champion Belal Muhammad in consecutive fights. Both ranked, both decisive.
"If I beat Islam I'm the No. 1 pound for pound on the planet," Garry said when the fight was announced. "I don't want to hear your sorry excuses after I smash him."
He accused Makhachev of trying to duck him by requesting Morales instead. Said the champion was "seeking easier opponents." Whether that's true or just fight promotion doesn't really matter because the fight is signed regardless of what either guy wanted.
The Matchup
Honestly this fight comes down to one question. Can Garry stop the takedown?
Makhachev's wrestling is suffocating. He doesn't just take you down. He holds you there, drains your energy, transitions to submissions, and makes you feel like you're drowning for 25 minutes. JDM is one of the best finishers at welterweight and Makhachev made him look helpless on the mat.
Garry's striking is legit though. His distance management is good. His jab is long and he uses his reach well. On the feet this is a competitive fight because Garry is the bigger man at 170 and Makhachev is coming up from lightweight where the guys are naturally smaller.
But if it goes to the ground? Islam has submitted or controlled better grapplers than Garry on the mat. And Garry's wrestling defense has never been tested at the level Makhachev brings. Rakhmonov tested it and won a decision. Makhachev is a level above Rakhmonov in terms of grappling pressure.
Garry has to keep this fight standing for 25 minutes against a man who has made world class fighters look average on the ground. That's the whole fight. If he can do it, the upset is real. If he can't, it's going to look like the JDM fight all over again.
The McGregor Shadow
Conor McGregor fights Max Holloway at UFC 329 on July 11. That fight is at welterweight. If McGregor wins, he's an active welterweight coming off a win against a former champion. The Conor comeback story would be the biggest thing in the sport. And Dana is not going to pass up the opportunity to book Conor for the welterweight title if the demand is there.
Garry knows this. Makhachev knows this. Everybody in the division knows that McGregor winning at UFC 329 could skip the entire queue and jump straight to a title fight regardless of rankings. That's how the UFC works when Conor is involved.
So Garry isn't just fighting for the belt on August 15. He's fighting to prove that the #1 ranking means something. That you can't just skip the line because your name is bigger. And Makhachev is fighting to prove that he's so dominant that it doesn't matter who shows up because the result is going to be the same.
The "AliExpress McGregor" comment is Makhachev's way of saying Garry isn't even the real version of the comparison people keep making. The real McGregor is fighting July 11. The knockoff is fighting August 15. Whether Garry uses that as motivation or lets it get under his skin is going to tell you a lot about where his head is going into the biggest fight of his life.
Philadelphia on August 15
UFC 330 at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. Two title fights. Makhachev vs Garry for the welterweight belt and Mackenzie Dern vs Gillian Robertson for the strawweight title in the co-main.
The UFC hasn't been to Philly since 2019. Dana said the fans there are "the best" and that he can't wait to get back. Philly fight fans are a different breed and a welterweight title fight with this much drama attached to it is going to make for a loud arena.
Makhachev is going to walk in as a massive favorite. Probably -400 or bigger. The 16 fight win streak. The P4P #1 ranking. The two division championship resume. Everything says Islam dominates this fight and extends the streak to 17.
But Garry is 28, hungry, has been campaigning for this fight for months, and just got told by the champion that he's a cheap knockoff who doesn't even deserve the opportunity.
"AliExpress McGregor."
We'll see if the discount version has enough to shock the world on August 15.
