Chimaev vs. Strickland Is Finally Happening and the Backstory Is Even Crazier Than You Think

Chimaev and Strickland have been going at each other since a gym blowup that allegedly ended with a gun. Now they headline UFC 328 in Newark, one of nine newly announced cards leading to the White House event in June.

Dana White went on a full announcement spree yesterday and dropped every main event from now through the White House card in June. There's a lot to unpack there and we'll get to all of it. But the one fight that has the entire MMA world buzzing is the UFC 328 headliner on May 9 in Newark. Khamzat Chimaev defending his middleweight title against Sean Strickland.

This isn't just a title fight. This is years of trash talk, conflicting sparring stories, accusations of gym bullying, a gun incident, insults about entire countries, and two guys who genuinely seem to hate each other finally getting locked in a cage together with a belt on the line.

The press conference alone might be worth the price of admission.

How the Beef Started at Xtreme Couture

The whole thing goes back to 2022 when Chimaev was training at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, the same gym where Strickland has been based for years under head coach Eric Nicksick. At first, things seemed fine. There's video of Strickland and Chimaev training together. In one clip, Strickland is telling Chimaev to take it easy on the other guys in the gym because he's "better than everyone." Seemed friendly enough at the time.

Then something went sideways. According to Chimaev, it started in a group chat for the gym. Someone made a comment about Chechens. Chimaev responded by calling Strickland an "American chicken" and threatened to beat him up. The next day, Strickland showed up to the gym with a gun because he thought Chimaev was going to attack him.

That's not a normal Tuesday at the gym.

Chimaev later said the whole thing was a misunderstanding and that his English wasn't good enough at the time to fully understand what was being said. But the damage was done. Their relationship went from training partners to enemies and it's only gotten worse since.

Two Completely Different Versions of Sparring

This is the part that makes the fight so personal. Both guys claim they got the better of each other in training and neither is budging.

The general consensus from people around the gym was that Chimaev dominated the sparring sessions. That was the story for years. Then Strickland flipped the script at his UFC Houston media day a few weeks ago.

"I made him quit in training," Strickland said. "Witnesses are in the audience. We were doing positional grappling and he starts on my back and it was the first round and I let him choke me because no one gives a damn. Then the second round starts and we're going."

Strickland also accused Chimaev of being a gym bully who deliberately picked the smallest, weakest guys to spar with instead of challenging the high level UFC fighters at Xtreme Couture. "Every time Chimaev would walk in the gym, he would pick the smallest, lowest level pro. You're beating the hell out of a 1-1 guy when there's high level UFC fighters right there. He's picking that guy because he's a bully."

Chimaev's response was simple: "When I was there, he never said anything. When I left Vegas, when they stopped my visa, he started to talk. When I came back, I'm in LA, bro. Come on. If it's something personal for you, just come."

Translation: you waited until I was in a different country to start talking. That's all you need to know about how Strickland operates in Chimaev's eyes.

The Insults Got Personal. Like, Really Personal.

Once the sparring drama went public, the trash talk between these two went completely off the rails. Strickland has called Chimaev a "Chechen whore," accused him of selling his soul to a "terrorist dictator" (a reference to Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov), and questioned his willingness to actually defend his title against anyone.

"If you notice what he does in the division, he just runs and hides," Strickland said after knocking out Anthony Hernandez at UFC Houston. "He wants to go to 205 and fight Jiri. You're the champ, dude. You just run and hide."

Chimaev has fired back by using MMA math. After Strickland called him out post-Houston, Chimaev pointed out that he destroyed the same guy who beat Strickland twice (Dricus du Plessis). He also called Strickland an "American b*tch" and invited him to settle things in person in LA.

The whole beef reads like two guys who were genuinely cool with each other, had a misunderstanding that escalated way too fast because of egos and cultural friction, and now can't take back any of the things they've said. Which makes it the perfect fight.

The Fighters: Where They Stand Going Into UFC 328

Chimaev is 15-0. Undefeated. He won the middleweight title by completely mauling du Plessis over five rounds at UFC 319 last August, racking up over 21 minutes of control time. Before that, he ran through Kamaru Usman and Robert Whittaker. Nobody has figured out his wrestling and when he takes you down, the fight is basically over. His first title defense has been a long time coming and there's been real criticism about his activity level since winning the belt.

Strickland is 30-7, which doesn't sound elite until you look at the names. He shocked the world by outpointing Israel Adesanya to win the title back in 2023. Both of his recent losses came to du Plessis in title fights. He just knocked out Anthony Hernandez at UFC Houston and looked as sharp as he ever has. He's coming off a six month suspension for getting into an altercation with a regional fighter who beat one of his teammates at a Tuff-N-Uff event, which is the most Strickland thing imaginable.

The last time Strickland fought in Newark, he beat Paulo Costa by unanimous decision in a fight that fans absolutely hated because of how little action there was. He knows that. Dana White knows that. And Dana basically acknowledged it when announcing the fight: "Strickland looked incredible in his last performance. How much security do you think we're going to need for Chimaev?"

The Full Schedule Dump (Every Main Event Through the White House)

Dana didn't just announce Chimaev vs. Strickland. He rolled out the entire UFC calendar from now through Freedom 250. Here's every confirmed main event:

UFC 327 (April 11): Jiri Prochazka vs. Carlos Ulberg. This is for the now vacant light heavyweight title after Pereira moved up to heavyweight.

UFC Winnipeg (April 18): Gilbert Burns vs. Mike Malott. Veteran welterweight scrap in Canada.

UFC Vegas 116 (April 25): Aljamain Sterling vs. Youssef Zalal. This could be a featherweight title eliminator depending on what happens in the division.

UFC 328 (May 9, Newark): Chimaev vs. Strickland for the middleweight title. Co-main is Volkov vs. Waldo Cortes-Acosta in a potential heavyweight title eliminator. Plus Jan Blachowicz vs. Bogdan Guskov 2, Sean Brady vs. Joaquin Buckley, and King Green vs. Jeremy Stephens. Yes. Jeremy Stephens is back. In the UFC. In 2026. Fighting King Green. I have questions.

UFC Vegas 117 (May 16): Arnold Allen vs. Melquizael Costa. Costa has been on an absolute tear with six straight wins including some nasty first-round finishes. This is his first main event and a real step up.

UFC Macau (May 30): Song Yadong vs. Deiveson Figueiredo. Two former title challengers going at it in the bantamweight division. Sergei Pavlovich vs. Tallison Teixeira is also on this card.

UFC Vegas 118 (June 6): Belal Muhammad vs. Gabriel Bonfim. Muhammad needs a win to stay relevant in the welterweight picture. Bonfim is a rising threat.

UFC Freedom 250 (June 14, White House): Topuria vs. Gaethje for the lightweight title. Pereira vs. Gane for the interim heavyweight title. Six fights total.

That's nine events announced in one sitting. The UFC is clearly trying to change the narrative after a rough week of Jones drama, Rousey criticism, and fan backlash over the White House card. Loading up the schedule with fights people actually want to see is a smart play.

Why Chimaev vs. Strickland Matters Beyond the Belt

There are title fights and then there are title fights where both guys would happily fight each other for free in a parking lot. This is the second kind. The beef is real, the sparring stories are contradictory, the insults have crossed lines that can't be uncrossed, and both fighters are at a point in their careers where this fight defines what comes next.

If Chimaev wins, he silences the loudest critic in the division and proves his title reign is legit. If Strickland wins, he becomes a two time middleweight champion and gets to tell the "I made him quit in training" story for the rest of his life with a belt to back it up. Either way, the press conferences are going to be absolutely crazy.
